The Brooklyn-based jewelry designer is more interested in accessories made out of hair. Under her dextrous hands, stubborn flyaways are trussed and tamed, transforming from shorn tresses into braided, woven, and crocheted necklaces, brooches, bracelets, and earrings.

Wearable mementos made from human hair have a storied past, according to Varges. During the time of Louis XIV, mourning Europeans spun hair from their dearly departed into jewelry, as did the Victorians more than a century later. Fascinated by the craft, Varges has made it her mission to revive the near-forgotten art form, using locks she obtains from weave shops in her neighborhood. (Yes, she washes them first.)
