The GreenShows Brings Luxury Ethical Fashion to Fall 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

Despite mystery and rumors surrounding the state of The Green Shows, all doubts came to a halt last Friday after the grand unveiling of a group show highlighting eight sustainable designers at The Box at Lincoln Center. The line-up included United Bamboo, Bamboo by United Bamboo, Study NY by Tara St. James, H. Fredriksson, Luis Valenzuela, The Battalion, Ajna, and Artists and Revolutionaries. The space was filled with eco-fashion followers and celebs alike who were on hand to admire the upcoming Fall 2012 collection previews.
Samantha Pleet Revives Romanticism at Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week

It’s a little distressing to see Samantha Pleet without a hat. Emerging at the end of her Fall/Winter 2012 debut at New York Fashion Week—Pleet is part of a group showcase by Gen Art—the Brooklyn designer is missing her trademark topper. Her models, on the other hand, are all sporting wide, crown-less brims of burnished gold, looking like a cross between the haloed Madonnas of Renaissance art and a jejune Leslie Caron from the first act of Gigi. Her fall lineup, Pleet tells us later, is a “revival of Romanticism,” the artistic, literary, and intellectual movement that began as a backlash against the industrial revolution. It’s her way of fending off the harsh realities other people view as inevitable, she says; a candle held out in the darkness.
Suzanne Rae is Faux Real at Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week

Who needs fur when you could have faux as flirty and fun as the foxy stoles and multi-”tailed” boleros that came floating down the catwalk for Suzanne Rae’s Fall 2012 showcase? Housed inside the Box at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, the show was a moody mix of inspiration. (Rae describes channelling the spirits of Jim Morrison, Aldous Huxley and William Blake.) Much of the line was highly wearable—think structured sheath dresses and versatile trousers—with some more avant garde pieces like this jellyfish-like creation that elevated the line from mundane to musical. We found ourselves especially fond of details like deep-cowl back lines, fringed necks, and attached capes as well as Rae’s foray into mimicking the drape and feel of fur with classic materials like velvet and cotton. Libertine Taps Into Punk Subculture for Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week

Shove a ruby-slippered Dorothy Gale into a time machine, direct her to Studio 54 at the height of its hedonism with a pit stop in 1960s Carnaby Street and, with a little bit of luck, you might end up with Libertine’s Fall/Winter 2012 show at New York Fashion Week. The lineup of vintage threads, retooled by L.A. designer Johnson Hartig into punk-edge designs for men and women, beams with a mischievous exuberance, a giddy procession of mother-of-pearl-studded biker jackets, Muppet-pelt boas, and metallic paillettes that throb like miniature disco balls under the house lights.
Stella McCartney Explains Why She Doesn’t Use Leather in PETA Video
It’s widely known that Stella McCartney doesn’t use fur in her collections. Less touted, perhaps, is the vegan designer’s rejection of leather. In a new video from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, timed to coincide with New York Fashion Week, McCartney explains why she shed the use of animal skins. Leather isn’t a by-product of the meat industry, she says, but an important co-product that contributes directly to the ills of factory farming. But although PETA planned to run a truncated version of the PSA on taxi screens across Manhattan, fashion’s tastemakers will not, in fact, be schooled by McCartney between shows.
Will Online-Only Fashion Shows Replace Runways at Fashion Week?
KCD wants to revolutionize the runway, and you can watch it all unfold on your laptop or iPad. The public-relations powerhouse, which manages high-end labels such as Gucci, Versace, Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, Chanel, and Diane von Furstenberg, announced Monday that it will produce a number of fashion shows in a purely digital format. Coming on the heels of a recent show date “crisis”—a result of Milan pushing back the dates for its September shows—KCD is pitching the invitation-only Internet platform as an alternative to the increasingly crowded schedules that pull editors and store buyers in multiple, often opposing, directions. (Cue the usual gripes about aching feet.) Set to launch during New York Fashion Week, Digital Fashion Shows will debut with Prabal Gurung’s inaugural ICB collection on February 15, although his signature label will appear more conventionally on the catwalk.
